Crowsworn - the gloomy metroidvania reminiscent of Hollow Knight and Bloodborn

The new game of the Indie developer Mongoose Rodeo is gloomy, actionlastic and reminiscent of his artstyle from about games like Hollow Knight.

Crowsworn is the title of the Metroidvanias, which is currently financed via Kickstarter. Or was better to finance - the target amount of 125,000 Canadian dollars (converted almost 85,000 euros) had already achieved the game within the first three hours of the campaign. Even most optional goals are already unlocked, because the game has already collected over 600,000 euros (as of August 6, 2021).

What Crowsworn makes so interesting for Metroidvania fans so, we explain to you here.

That's Crowsworn

First of all, the story of Crowsworn, the metroidvania-typical with a rather simple premise comes from. We slip into the role of a mysterious figure with pest doctor's mask, which wakes up in a coffin and try to get back their lost memories.

The person roams the country Fearanndal, on which a dark curse lies. Large parts of the inhabitants have disappeared, instead, the land of soulless creatures is hit.

An insight into the story and the gameplay you get in the first trailer:

In the gameplay Metroidvania fans are likely to feel directly at home. We roam various 2D areas and get on the way new skills that allow us to unlock other areas. In addition to regular enemies, there should also be challenging boss fights.

Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization Review In the fight we have three weapons available: the scenes, the pistols and dark magic. The Sense is our melee weapon of choice, while the pistols make less harm (and need some time to reload), but let us attack from afar.

With the magical skills, called Corvian Powers, we can trigger effects, such as firing projectiles or trigger large-scale explosions. To use them, however, we consume malice, a resource that we only get by harming opponents with the scythe.

We can combine the different weapons for this by throwing our scenes and then shooting with the pistols on it, so that the scythe is spoiled several times on the opponent. The goal is a fast and stylish combat system , according to the developers.

In addition to the struggles, there are of course also Platforming passages, where the Dash-Move may not be missing. Who feels reminiscent about games like Hollow Knight or Metroid, is just right: According to Mongoose Rodeo, Crowsworn was inspired by Hollow Knight, Bloodborne, Devil May Cry and Super Metroid.

Who now has more desire for Hollow Knight (which was also funded at that time via Kickstarter), finds the trailer for the continuation Silksong:

Optional goals achieved

The Kickstarter campaign for Crowsworn runs until the 9th of August 2021 and has reached almost all of its optional goals at the current time, including a voice edition for NPCs and bosses, a boss Rush mode and a free DLC added after the launch . Currently there are only animated intermediate sequences.

Which platforms will appear Crowsworn? The developers have already confirmed that Crowsworn will appear for PC (Steam, Mac and Linux). Somewhat inaccurate is currently the stand for consoles. Although a release for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft consoles is planned, accurate plans could not name Mongoose Rodeo so far.

When will Crowsworn appear? A little waiting for all who have now become curious, but nevertheless. The kickstart campaign serves only to finance the game, so that Mongoose Rodeo will be employed for a few years with the development. Currently planning a release of the game for December 2023 . From experience, however, the in such campaigns can be moved a little longer back.
